NewsPulse is a walkie-talkie style mobile app made only for Newsbytes. Staff hold one button to speak, and everyone on the channel hears them live. It signs in with Byteline accounts, so only authorized staff can use it.
The app is meant for the moments when a message cannot wait: a reporter at an event who needs a photographer, a layout artist who needs an answer before printing, or a breaking story that every editor must hear at once.
Newsbytes staff already have The Byteline for dispatches, tasks, messages, and the editorial calendar. During live coverage and on deadline, however, staff still rely on personal group chats and phone calls. Urgent messages get lost among other messages, people cannot tell who is available, and typing is slow when someone is holding a camera or walking across campus.
Campus coverage is also done on the move. A photographer has both hands on a camera, a reporter is walking between venues, and a phone is usually in a pocket or bag with the screen off. A message that only appears when someone unlocks the phone and opens a chat arrives too late. A walkie-talkie works because the message is heard the moment it is sent, without anyone touching the device.
Apps like Buzz show that this is possible on a phone: the person speaks, and the others hear it right away, even when their screens are off. NewsPulse brings this to Newsbytes, with channels that match the publication, accounts that match The Byteline, and no strangers on the line. As long as the app is running and the phone is online, voice comes through. If a phone is offline for a while, the message is held briefly and delivered when it reconnects, so nothing important is missed.
Voice calls tie up one person at a time. Group chats bury urgent messages. There is no quick way to reach a whole desk, and no sign of who is on duty.
One press reaches a whole channel instantly, and it plays on the other phones even with the screen locked. Every desk has its own channel, a breaking alert reaches everyone, and the app shows who is online.
NewsPulse gives Newsbytes staff a fast, private, hands-free way to talk to each other during coverage, production, and publication. It is built specifically for the publication's structure and signs in with Byteline, so it works as part of the Newsbytes platform instead of as another stranger's app.
General objective. To build a secure, mobile-first push-to-talk app that gives Newsbytes staff instant voice communication during coverage, production, and publication, and that connects to The Byteline.
Specific objectives. The project aims to:
| In scope (version 1) | Out of scope (for now) |
|---|---|
| Live voice over mobile data and Wi-Fi | Video calling |
| Channels, online status, Breaking alerts | Public use or use by non-staff |
| Byteline account sign-in | Work without any internet connection |
| Android release, then iOS | Text chat and photo sharing (planned for version 2) |
| Part | Proposed choice |
|---|---|
| Mobile app | React Native, so one codebase covers Android and iOS |
| Live voice | A real-time voice service (WebRTC, such as LiveKit), kept separate from The Byteline's database |
| Accounts and channels | The existing Byteline back end on Cloudflare Pages, Functions, and D1 |
| Notifications | Firebase Cloud Messaging for push alerts |
| Background operation | Android: a foreground service with a visible notification. iOS: background audio mode with VoIP push. Both need testing on real phones. |
| Design | Newsbytes colors, fonts, and themes shared with The Byteline |
| Phase | What happens | Target |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Planning | Approval, channel list, screens and design | Weeks 1–2 |
| 2. Core build | Sign-in, channels, push-to-talk, online status | Weeks 3–6 |
| 3. Background & alerts | Always-on background mode, breaking alert, push notifications, catch-up delivery, themes | Weeks 7–8 |
| 4. Testing | Test with a small group at a real event, including locked screens and different phone brands, then fix problems | Weeks 9–10 |
| 5. Launch | Android release to staff, staff briefing, then iOS | Weeks 11–12 |
| Item | Note |
|---|---|
| Development | Done by the Web & Domain Moderator as part of the Website Agreement |
| Hosting and database | Existing Cloudflare setup used by The Byteline |
| Voice and notification services | Free tiers at the start. Check current limits and prices before launch. |
| Store accounts | A Google Play developer account (one-time fee) and, for iOS, an Apple developer account (yearly fee). Both fees are to be confirmed. |
| Testing devices | Staff phones used during the pilot |
| Risk | Plan |
|---|---|
| Weak signal at events | Voice-note fallback and low-data mode |
| Misuse or noise on channels | Role-based channels, mute controls, and editors who can remove people from a channel |
| Battery drain from always-on listening | Keep the connection light, show a clear notification, and offer an off-duty mode |
| Phone brands that close background apps (common on Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Realme) | Guide staff to turn off battery optimization for NewsPulse, and test on those brands first |
| iOS limits on background audio | Use only the background modes Apple allows. Android comes first, as planned. |
| Voice service costs grow | Start with a small pilot and set usage limits |
| Staff turnover each year | Accounts follow Byteline, and the successor receives full documentation |
